The Park » The new boundary
Boundary adjustment
Our aim was to review the boundary, draw up a proposal shared with the Park Community and organise the adjacent area. This is the letter from Park Authority President, Prof. Guido De Zordo, opening the procedure for a generalised review of the boundaries.
And this is the letter with which the President of the Park Community, Sergio Reolon, elicited opinions on the boundaries from the local authorities
The lengthy dialogue with the local authorities to review the Park perimeter ended on 27 October 2006 when the Authority's Board of Directors approved the technical document setting out the proposal for the new boundaries.
In June 2007, the Ministry approved the local authorities' proposal and in October 2007, the Veneto Region also expressed a favourable opinion on the new boundaries. The procedure continued with approval by the Joint State Regions Conference (Conferenza Unificata Stato Regioni) in October 2007 and the Council of Ministers Resolution of December 2007. Finally, on 9 January 2008, the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, signed the Decree approving the new Park perimeter. The Decree was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale, no. 108 of 9 May 2008 and from that moment on, the new boundaries took effect.
In the words of Park Director, Nino Martino: "President Napolitano's signature concluded the demanding but constructive dialogue begun in 2005 with the 15 municipalities wholly or partly within the Park. The final result is a new and certain boundary, clearly identifiable on the ground as it is anchored to elements such as roads, footpaths, rivers, peaks and ridges. This resolves the hoary problem, a particular complaint of hunters, of being certain whether or not you are within the protected area. For us, the result is both an achievement and a starting point. We have, in fact, already begun work on possible proposals to expand the Park to include areas of exceptionally high wildlife and environmental value, often already protected in the form of nature reserves, which if incorporated in the Park could create a single great ecological corridor from Friuli to Trentino Alto Adige". The President of the Park, Guido De Zordo, also expressed his satisfaction with the results achieved: "Fruit of the Authority's commitment to finding solutions shared by the local authorities, the only ones able to guarantee a solid future for the Park and its initiatives". Both the President and Director of the Park emphasised that adjustment of the Park's boundaries was the only example in the whole of Italy of a conservation and planning strategy constructed "from the bottom up". A strategy enabling local citizens and administrators to identify more closely with the Park, no longer seen as a reality imposed from the top, but rather a common asset whose protection and promotion can and must involve everyone, starting from those who have always lived and worked there.
Unlike the "old" 1990 boundaries which were identified on a 1:100,000 scale map, the new boundaries are defined on two 1:25,000 scale maps, accompanied by 12 detailed 1:10,000 maps to guarantee a level of precision which no longer leaves room for doubt as to the actual boundary of the Park.

These maps are intended for information purposes only and do not have official value. The official detailed maps are those annexed to the Presidential Decree of 9 January 2008 published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 108 of 9 May 2008.
